Cholera's last appearance in Haiti

Posted by rblyston on 01 Jun 2011 at 17:50 GMT

The Farmer et al. paper asserts that cholera has not been seen before in Haiti. Two citations are given: Kiple and Ackers. Ackers et al. only deal with cholera in the time period 1991 to 1995. Kiple is vague. The are references suggesting there were cholera cases (few) in the early 1960's in Haiti and other sources suggest it has been more than a 100 years since the last epidemic. However, these sources are also vague as to their data. Other than this reference to never having cholera in Haiti, the Farmer et al. paper is quite important and has much to say. I note that the authors indicate that vaccination of the general population should be undertaken, which has not been the official stance. The current world supply of cholera vaccine is insufficient to service the population of that poor country as is pointed out in the paper.
